Ozempic for Cats? The Pet Peptide Trend Getting Seriously Interesting

If you’ve ever owned a cat, you already know how this conversation usually goes.

Vet: “Your cat could probably lose a couple of pounds.”

Owner: “Okay, I’ll feed him less.”

Cat: Absolutely not.

Cue 5:17 a.m. screaming, dramatic staring at the food bowl and the general impression that your cat hasn’t eaten since 2008.

But something pretty interesting is happening in veterinary research right now.

The same peptide-drug revolution that completely changed human weight management is starting to make its way into the pet world.

Researchers are now testing GLP-1 receptor agonists specifically designed for overweight and obese cats.

And no, we’re not talking about secretly slipping Ozempic into Mr. Whiskers’ dinner.

We’re talking about actual veterinary research involving purpose-built treatments, clinical trials and pet-specific drug-delivery systems.

Welcome to one of the strangest — and potentially most important — trends happening in pet peptides right now.

First, Cats Actually Have a Pretty Big Weight Problem

Chunky cats might dominate Instagram, but veterinary researchers aren’t exactly laughing.

Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine says that more than one-third of young adult cats and roughly two-thirds of mature cats in the United States are overweight or obese.

Extra weight in cats is associated with problems including diabetes, arthritis and shorter lifespan.

And here’s the frustrating part:

We already know the obvious solution.

Eat less.

Move more.

Unfortunately, explaining calorie restriction to a cat is about as productive as negotiating your mortgage rate with one.

Diet programs can work extremely well under controlled conditions, but Cornell researchers point out that real-world weight-loss programs often struggle because both the pet and the owner have to stick with them.

Exercise isn’t necessarily easy either.

You can tell a Labrador it’s time for a three-mile walk and he’ll probably beat you to the door.

Tell your 16-pound indoor cat it’s cardio day and he’ll stare at you from the couch.

That’s where GLP-1 research becomes interesting.

Wait… GLP-1 for Cats Is Actually Being Studied?

Yep.

Cornell researchers have been working with biotechnology company Akston Biosciences on a peptide-based compound called AKS-562c.

AKS-562c is a novel GLP-1 receptor agonist being investigated specifically for weight loss in overweight and obese cats.

Researchers aren’t simply asking whether it works in a laboratory setting either.

The Cornell project involves client-owned cats — actual household pets — and was designed to evaluate whether weekly administration could produce meaningful weight loss over an 11-week period while also tracking potential side effects.

Even more interesting, preliminary work has already generated some promising signals.

Research presented at the 2026 American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Forum found that AKS-562c could reduce food intake and limit weight gain in cats.

According to veterinary publication dvm360, the treatment was well tolerated during the 12-week research period, with researchers reporting no treatment-related toxicity or treatment-emergent anti-drug antibodies in the study.

That’s still early research.

But it’s considerably more interesting than “some guy on Reddit tried this with his cat.”

We’re talking about controlled veterinary research being presented at a major veterinary medicine conference.

That’s a pretty significant jump.

And There’s Another Company Working on a GLP-1 Cat Treatment

Things get even more interesting.

OKAVA Pharmaceuticals has started studying OKV-119, another GLP-1-based approach to feline weight management.

But this one comes with a twist.

Rather than asking owners to constantly administer medication, OKV-119 is being developed as a tiny subdermal implant containing exenatide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist.

OKAVA says the implant is roughly the size of a commonly used pet identification chip and is designed to release medication over approximately six months.

That’s clever for one obvious reason:

Cats aren’t exactly famous for being cooperative patients.

Giving a pill to some cats requires two adults, a towel, protective equipment and possibly an exorcist.

Daily injections?

Good luck.

A long-lasting implant could potentially remove a lot of that hassle.

In December 2025, OKAVA announced that the first cat had been dosed in its MEOW-1 trial, which is studying OKV-119 in overweight and obese client-owned cats.

The study is operating under an FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine Investigational New Animal Drug application and is evaluating safety, tolerability and weight-loss effectiveness.

That’s where the pet peptide world becomes much more interesting than simply borrowing ideas from human biohacking.

Companies are starting to design peptide therapies around the actual realities of owning an animal.

The Bigger Goal Might Not Just Be Making Cats Skinnier

This is where things get especially interesting.

Weight loss is the obvious headline.

But researchers are thinking beyond the number on the scale.

Obesity in cats is associated with metabolic disease, joint problems and diabetes.

GLP-1 receptor agonists influence appetite and metabolic signaling, which is why researchers are exploring whether veterinary versions could eventually have applications beyond simply helping an overweight cat slim down.

OKAVA, for example, is also studying its technology in relation to feline diabetes and metabolic health.

That doesn’t mean we’ve discovered a miracle longevity drug for cats.

But the direction of research is worth watching.

Human medicine went through something similar.

GLP-1 drugs initially became associated primarily with diabetes.

Then came obesity.

Now they’re being investigated across a much broader range of metabolic and cardiovascular conditions.

Veterinary researchers are naturally wondering whether some of those ideas might translate to companion animals.

There’s Also a Weird Human-Pet Problem Appearing

Here’s the ironic part.

While scientists are carefully developing GLP-1 therapies for pets, veterinarians are also dealing with more pets accidentally being exposed to GLP-1 drugs meant for humans.

The ASPCA issued a pet safety alert in March 2026 after seeing increasing concerns around accidental exposure to medications including semaglutide, tirzepatide, liraglutide and dulaglutide.

These include well-known human medications marketed under names such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound.

The ASPCA specifically notes that none of these human medications are currently approved for veterinary use.

That’s a really important distinction.

Researching a pet-specific GLP-1 treatment does not mean owners should start experimenting with their own prescriptions on animals.

Different species process medications differently.

Dosing is different.

Formulation matters.

Clinical monitoring matters.

And let’s be fair — your cat didn’t sign up to become your peptide experiment.

The interesting story isn’t “give pets Ozempic.”

It’s that veterinary researchers are taking what we’ve learned from human peptide medicine and trying to build treatments specifically for animals.

Pet Obesity Research Is Getting More Serious Overall

The timing isn’t accidental.

Pet obesity has become a major area of veterinary research.

A 2026 study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science examined obesity risk factors in privately owned cats and found relationships involving indoor confinement, age and owner-pet dynamics.

Another 2026 study published in PLOS One found something pet owners might recognize immediately:

Owners weren’t particularly good at judging whether their own cats were overweight.

Researchers found relatively poor agreement between veterinarians’ assessment of feline body condition and owners’ perception of their cats’ weight.

Basically:

“My cat isn’t overweight. He’s just fluffy.”

Veterinarian: “Ma’am, he’s an orange bowling ball.”

That disconnect makes obesity harder to tackle because the first step is realizing there’s a problem.

Could Dogs Be Next?

Very possibly.

OKAVA has already indicated that information gathered from its feline GLP-1 research could help guide similar development in dogs. The company has previously announced work aimed at adapting its long-term GLP-1 platform for canine metabolic health and obesity as well.

Considering how common obesity is among dogs, that’s hardly surprising.

And it points toward something bigger happening in veterinary medicine.

We’re beginning to see technologies originally developed around human metabolic medicine adapted for companion animals.

Not copied blindly.

Adapted.

Different dosing.

Different delivery systems.

Different clinical studies.

Different biological considerations.

That’s exactly what responsible pet peptide research should look like.

So, Are Weight-Loss Peptides About to Become Normal for Pets?

We’re not there yet.

AKS-562c remains investigational.

OKV-119 remains investigational.

And human GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic and Mounjaro are not currently approved as veterinary weight-loss medications.

But the direction of travel is fascinating.

A few years ago, the idea of a GLP-1 weight-loss medication specifically designed for cats would have sounded like a joke.

Now there are actual clinical trials.

Actual biotechnology companies.

Actual veterinary researchers.

And actual household cats participating in the research.

That’s why this story matters beyond feline obesity.

It shows how quickly the peptide world is expanding beyond human medicine.

Today we’re talking about appetite and metabolism.

Tomorrow it could be recovery, inflammation, healthy aging or other areas where peptide biology is already being investigated.

The pet peptide industry is still incredibly young.

But one thing is becoming pretty clear:

The future of veterinary medicine may include a lot more peptides than most pet owners ever expected.

And somewhere out there, one very hungry cat is absolutely furious about it.
